Welcome to the Calcione

A wild Tuscan estate with a medieval castle at its heart, where horses, lakes, forests and centuries of family history set the scene for an entirely different kind of Italian escape.

Hidden within more than 1,300 acres of rolling hills, deep forests and wild lakes, Castello del Calcione is Tuscany at its most authentic and wonderfully untamed. At its heart stands a centuries-old family castle, surrounded by a landscape made for adventure. Ride through the woods, swim in the lakes, hunt for truffles at dawn or disappear beneath the trees for a long picnic. This is a place to slow down, explore and experience the freedom of life in the Tuscan countryside.

Most importantly, it remains a real family home, with the family still occupying a private wing of the castle giving Calcione a warmth and personality rarely found in historic estates.

THE CASTLE

Calcione has lived many lives, evolving over the centuries from a fortress-monastery into the family country house it is today.

Inside, grand reception rooms, fireplaces, antiques, paintings and pieces collected over generations give the castle its unmistakably lived-in character. There are elegant salons for gathering, quieter corners for reading and terraces and courtyards that naturally draw life outdoors.

Most importantly, it remains a real family home, with the family still occupying a private wing of the castle — giving Calcione a warmth and personality rarely found in historic estates.

THE BEDROOMS

The castle's individually designed bedrooms are filled with the character of the generations who have lived within its walls.

Castello del Calcione accommodates up to 22 guests across 11 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.

Antique furniture, four-poster beds, original beams, artworks and views across the gardens give each room its own identity, while ensuite or private bathrooms bring modern comfort to the historic setting.

For larger groups, beautifully restored former farmhouses are scattered across the surrounding hills, allowing guests to extend their stay across the wider estate.

LA SCUDERIA

Horses have always been part of life at Calcione.

The estate was once home to one of the area's major horse farms, breeding and providing horses for Siena's legendary Palio, and that equestrian heritage remains deeply woven into its identity today.

From the Scuderia, guests can explore the estate on horseback, following trails through woodland, fields and the surrounding Tuscan countryside — arguably the most natural way to discover Calcione.

OUTDOOR LIVING

Beyond the castle walls lies an extraordinary private world of woodland, rolling hills, gardens and two wild lakes.

Days might begin with a swim in the castle pool before moving to a picnic beneath the trees, a game of tennis or an afternoon beside the lake.

Canoes invite guests onto the water, while miles of paths lead through forests, meadows and olive groves on foot, bicycle or horseback.

Closer to the castle, the traditional Italian garden, courtyards and terraces provide beautiful settings for long lunches, evening drinks and dinners beneath the Tuscan sky.

Where You’ll Stay

Set in the rolling countryside of eastern Tuscany, Castello del Calcione lies just outside the medieval village of Lucignano, surrounded by more than 1,300 acres of private woodland, hills and wild lakes.

Perfectly positioned between Siena and Arezzo, the estate offers a beautiful base from which to discover some of Tuscany's most celebrated landscapes. Spend the morning wandering through medieval hilltop villages, venture south towards the vineyards and cypress-lined roads of the Val d'Orcia, or discover the Renaissance treasures of Florence before returning to the tranquillity of the estate.

Closer to home, life moves at a wonderfully slower pace. Explore local markets, vineyards and traditional trattorias, or simply remain within Calcione's extraordinary landscape, where riding trails, lakes and forests begin almost at the castle door.
